Bartele Gallery
Rare antique maps, prints and books in Jakarta
Bartele Gallery has a fascinating collection of antique maps, old prints, colonial photographs, historic books and antiques, some over 500 years old! The owner, Bartele Santema has together with the gallery’s curator and map expert, David Parry assembled this impressive collection of rare treasures.
The gallery is the only dedicated shop in Indonesia where you can buy original antique maps and prints. Even if you’re not looking to buy, the gallery, situated above Cazbar in the Mega Kuningan area of Jakarta, is well worth a visit. Antique maps are of great intellectual interest, as well as absorbing and intriguing to look at.
Dr David E Parry, author of “The Cartography of the East Indian Islands”, has been an an avid collector for over 30 years, and there seem to be nothing about cartography which he cannot answer! He can be found at the gallery Wednesdays and Fridays, glad to share his knowledge and to help picking out (or source) a special piece to complete a collection. He even helps arranging events at the gallery, during which he would be more than happy to talk about antique maps…
Those interested in the history of Southeast Asia and Indonesia may enjoy a visit to the Bartele Gallery, followed by a meal downstairs at the Cazbar. I know I did.
