Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDRTB) is a serious problem for tuberculosis control in many countries. It occurs when the tubercle bacilli become resistant towards the standard drug combination used, often an effect of not complying with the DOTS standard for TB control. Diagnosis and treatment of MDRTB is complicated and expensive. Side effects of the drugs used include psychosis among many, and require specialist assistance, often hospitalisation. Treatment results are not too encouraging.
In short, MDRTB is something to avoid. However, for a national TB control programme, MDRTB is a reality one need to relate to. In the Philippines, the Tropical Disease Foundation (TDF) in Makati, Manila operates an advanced laboratory for diagnostics, as well an a clinic (in Queson City, Manila). These photos are taken during a visit by the East Timor National TB Control Programme, wanting to study experiences and assess possible cooperation with the TDF.
