When the news broke that bishop Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo SDB had been awarded the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize (together with Jose Ramos Horta), the people of East Timor (Timor-Leste) cheered with joy.

In the mountain village of Letefoho, the rebel parish priest fr Domingos Soares (also known as Padre Maubere, father to the East Timorese people) arranged a substantial celebration in connection with the celebration of a new priest. Several thousand people found their way to the party!
