Tuberculosis (TB) is together with malaria a major killer disease on world basis. East Timor (Timor-Leste) has a more than fair share of both, and is counted among the worst TB affected countries in the world. Poverty, lack of access to the countryside residents and a (in best case) basic health care system make it a real challenge controlling TB.
The catholic church network started a programme based on IUATLD (and WHO) guidelines in 1997, which was adopted as the National TB Control Programme (NTP) by the fledgling state by the end of 1999. It was until end of 2005 supervised by Caritas Dili (a catholic aid organisation), and received technical and financial help from the government of Norway through Caritas Norway.
An evaluation of the NTP was done March 2003, and another September 2005. Although progress was being made, TB will remain a large problem in East Timor for years to come.
